JAY GARD - ORNAMENT- & SCULPTURE SCRIBBLE

In his series of works, Jay Gard explores the role of shapes in the history of art and thus puts the development from the ornamental to the abstract up for discussion. Gard experiments with shapes to challenge our perception and visualise the mostly unconscious aesthetic structures of our everyday lives. Through his artistic practice, which ranges from preliminary studies to large sculptures and installations, he takes shapes out of their usual context and enables the viewer to experience and question their inherent expressive power in a new way.
The artist is fascinated by the materiality of things, the forms of expression and objects that have accompanied the human urge to create throughout history. For the Unikat series of works Ornament and Sculpture-Scribble, he drew on historical wallpaper designs from the Baroque period. His works are a tribute to this creative impulse, which manifests itself in the careful selection of materials and the handcrafted execution of his art.

Jay Gard
Jay Gard studied at the Academy of Fine Arts (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst) in Leipzig and graduated the class of Installation and Space in 2011. Since 2022 he is a co-curator of BcmA Gallery in Berlin. In his artistic practice, Gard’s works range from space-filling installations to three-dimensional wall paintings. His pieces cite – sometimes ironically – artistic, cultural and design-related codes which he reinterprets and places in different contexts, stripping them of their original meaning.
